Your website is going to be the first thing that people see to identify with you.  Make sure it is a display you are proud of and that directly relates to what you’re trying to sell.  There are plenty of great web designers and web design packages promoted to help beginning businesses get started.  Look at several options before making a final decision.  The words that advertise your product and/or service need to be grammatically correct and error-free to present the best impression possible to future clients.  If writing is not your best forte, hire a freelance copywriter to assist you.  Many are available that can help put your ideas into words.  Ensure any links that are listed on your site are correct and work properly.  Also, make sure that all contact information is correct.  You don’t want to send a potential client to a wrong email address or give them a phone number that isn’t correct.

Forget Pop-ups

A compromise used by many companies who want to grab your attention but not make you angry is pop-ups. However, this technology is dated at best and obsolete at worst. It does nothing to enhance your web design. Just about every browser in this day and age from Microsoft Internet Explorer to the open source Mozilla Firefox to Google Chrome offer built-in pop-up blockers. Really, in 2009, the only person who would suggest using pop-ups as part of an integrated online marketing campaign likely doesn’t know anything about the Internet.  They tend to make potential clients more frustrated than attentive.

Be Prepared For Success

Let’s say you have devised an online marketing campaign that has built up a good amount of buzz and you have people flocking to your website like never before. Success! Now what? A surprising number of companies are seriously unprepared for the deluge that a good online marketing campaign brings. They either don’t upgrade their servers so the flood of traffic knocks their site offline or they don’t revamp their home page to give curious clickers the information they came for in the first place. No one is expecting you to turn everyone in this group of curious onlookers into customers, but you do need to convert at least two percent.  Two percent is a fairly standard goal that should be obtainable with your web design and winning text. Many of the good .com addresses are taken, but the my recommendation is to stay away from the .net, .tv, org., etc. People are used to the .com addresses and will be more responsive to them.  Also, the easier your URL is to remember, spell, etc., the better off your marketing campaign will be.

Security

If you have your own products to sell online, security is a technology feature that is in especially high demand today because, unfortunately, there is always going to be some unscrupulous persons looking for a way to get something for nothing.  You don’t want your site to become one of their targets.  Advertising security, and backing up that claim, needs to be a priority for any online marketing effort.  You want your customers to feel secure. Even though most credit cards now offer complete fraud protection, it is in your best interest to trumpet just how safe your site is.  Two of the most popular security enhancements that provide reputable logos to help your clients feel safe are VeriSign and HackerSafe.  Most services that offer shopping carts for your customers also provide security options.

Follow up

If you are lucky enough to turn an interested Internet web surfer into a buyer, you need to ensure you provide excellent service and that the customer’s experience is of the highest quality you can manage. Word-of-mouth is still the best advertising you can get, and you won’t get much in the way of word-of-mouth advertising unless you have customers using your business over and over again. It is important to follow up with emails, newsletters, phone calls, etc.  Find a good autoresponder, like Aweber or I-contact, and set it up to keep in contact with your customers weekly.
